Newsletter 1, 2007: Merit Selection Update

Both Leadership Frameworks are to be used in Round 1, Semester 1.

At this stage, the information below appears to be the situation that will exist during Round 1 (Semester 1) Merit Selection for 2007

Principal-level Positions

All applicants for Principal-level positions (Band 5 to Band 11 and Executive Principal) will be assessed against the new framework, "Leadership Matters".

  • The previous "STAR" format will no longer be the desired model.

  • If there are 5 Selection Criteria, they will likely be a maximum of one page each.  If there are 3 SCs, the likely maximum will be 2 pages per SC.

  • Multiple scenarios may be used within the SC to outline your skills.

  • It is likely that all applicants will receive a supervisor's report that rates them as "A", (Ready for promotion), "B" (Capable, but requires support) or "C", (Not yet ready for promotion to this level).  If this is implemented, it will require a supervisor-applicant interview to discuss the report.

A decision should be released soon on whether there will be 3 or 5 Selection Criteria, together with the wording for those criteria.

Associate Administrator Positions

All applicants for non-Principal positions (associate administrator positions) at this stage including Head of Department, Head of Curriculum, HOSES, Deputy Principal and Associate Principal will be assessed against the old framework, "Standards Framework For Leaders".

Applicants assessed against the Standards Framework will desirably bring the 'flavour' of "Leadership Matters" into their written applications and interviews.

A decision should be released soon on whether applicants who are applying for 'Associate' positions as well as 'Principal' positions will have to submit separate applications written against individual frameworks.

Support Options

One-One Support:
I offer a detailed, critique and application development program, followed up with interview skills development.  For Principals, my analysis of the new (and still unfolding) process shows that changes in your personal and professional approach to career management will be desirable to maintain momentum in reaching your career aspirations.  I now include work on professional report writing, analysing yourself and your supervisor, and upward management (managing your boss) as essential components of this program.
Please Note:  I work with a maximum of 15 clients in each round to ensure service is personalised.  Two have already registered and are working with me now.  Phone Mel (07) 5530 2676 or email Mel for information.

Workshops

Principals
I will offer 2 rounds of workshops  in Semester 1.  The first set (late February, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba) will focus on application writing with reference to interview preparation and "supervisor influencing" processes.  The second set (late March, same venues) will be highly focussed on interview skills.

If viable groups can be assembled in other centres, I am willing to travel.  Contact Mel to negotiate this. Local convenors receive discounted services.

Associate Administrators
I will also offer 2 rounds of workshops  in Semester 1.  The first set (late February, Brisbane only at this stage) will focus on application writing with reference to interview preparation.  The second set (late March, Brisbane again) will be highly focussed on interview skills.

If viable groups can be assembled in other centres, I am willing to travel.  Contact Mel to negotiate this. Local convenors receive discounted services.
