Many leaders have found the articles in these newsletters to be useful. Some have indicated they have a file in
which they keep them for future reference. All are based around the theme of those skills and competencies that
underpin the techniques of leadership and management, the skills that can facilitate working “Smarter, not
Harder”.
Your own newsletter should be a powerful tool that you use to communicate with your community. Focus on
achievement, the values that drive you and the school, the qualities of all staff - and if there is a problem that
is (or will be) common community knowledge, acknowledge it, "warts 'n all", but indicate what is being done to
rectify the situation. Nothing defuses potentially serious situations better than truth, transparency and
effective remedial action.
Hint: When writing your own newsletter, especially if you are writing a "headline"
article as the school or faculty leader, focus on values, recognitions, rewards, but in genuine, sincere
language. Never celebrate inadequate effort. Celebration must be reserved for outstanding
achievement. Recognition and reward come first as achievements start to be realised, but celebration follows
only when great achievement has been realised.
Use Stories: Stories or anecdotes with a moral are extremely useful
in introducing topics for discussion, or providing focus and direction.
You will find some stories in these newsletters.
